The Completed Rainbow Granny Square Baby Blanket

It’s finally finished! After a year-long gap when I had made all of the granny squares but failed to do anything with them, my colourful granny square baby blanket is now finished!

I decided to leave a straight edge on the border (made up of rounds of half double crochet stitches in rainbow colours) as I think it looks nice and neat and as there’s already enough going on with the bright granny squares!

So what do you think? I know it’s not perfect but it’s my first attempt made with granny squares I made when I first picked up a crochet hook. I don’t think it’s that bad!

Onto the next project, but I will post a quick How To… for this blanket soon!

Granny Square blanket update

Hello everyone, I hope you have all had a great week.

I’m sad to report that it’s been slow progress on my granny square blanket. Last week flew by in a flash and when I’m not working I seem to be doing wedding-related stuff. Who knew planning something like that would take so much time?!

Anyway, I have made some progress with my granny squares. I have decided to use Attic24’s really great and simple method to join my squares, but as they are a rainbow of different colours I felt like they needed tidying up a bit first.

I decided to single crochet a border around them in an off-white colour yarn, which I will then use to stitch them together. I’m hoping this will give me a neater finish as the joining stitches won’t show.

Here are the ones I have done so far:

Granny squares with white border

A comparison of a square with a border and without a border. I think with a border looks neater:

Border and no border

I managed to do eight squares today after a morning of chores and before going to work for a late shift and hopefully I will be able to do some more in the coming week. I hate not having time to craft!

Slowly, slowly makes a blanket!

Time to Stop Being a Square

When I’m learning something new I want to try as many things as possible, all at once. This generally means a few projects tend to fall by the wayside and remain unfinished. Is it just me or are you like that too?

When I first picked up a crochet hook and some wool in the autumn of 2012 I started, as probably most people do, making granny squares. I found making them really addictive as they got me familiar with using the hook, how to work with the wool and I could make them fairly quickly.

Granny squares

Except then I was bought a book on how to make amigurumi, so I ditched the granny squares and started making cute little animals instead.

The piles of woolly little squares were consigned to a draw and there they have stayed – until now. I think it’s about time I have a go at joining them together.

I’m a bit nervous about doing this (as I’ve never done it before) which is another reason why I never did it at the time.

So now, more than a year on, I’m on the lookout for an easy and foolproof way to join my little squares together and make a nice little baby blanket. Any top tips anyone please?

Hopefully I will be able to give you an update with the full stitched-together blanket soon…
